There are many causes for dizziness and loss of balance, but a large percentage is due to a weakness within our vestibular system which provides information about motion and the body’s position in space.
The brain, inner ear, vision and sensation, make up the systems that maintain balance. When any of these are impaired, the body experiences that mismatch of information which can cause imbalance, dizziness and/or vertigo. In vestibular rehabilitation, physical therapists apply specific techniques to treat balance disorders.
Our physical therapists take the patient’s entire vestibular system into account, and address issues that affect everyday life. Balance and coordination are assessed with the goal of stabilization.
We work closely with the patient and their personal physician to develop an individualized plan of care. We also work with Audiologist, Krista Follmer, AuD and Anthony Jackson, MD with Outer Banks Health Ear Nose & Throat. Treatment options may include exercises, visual system training, and balance activities to help you return to your daily activities.
