Outer Banks local Michael “Mike” Miller is a regular patient of Outer Banks Health Orthopedics & Sports Medicine. During one of his appointments, a nurse noticed that his blood pressure was unusually high. When it remained elevated at a follow-up visit shortly afterward, the team ensured he saw his primary care provider that same day.

“Y’all saved my life,” Mike said. “You took my blood pressure and sent me to my primary doctor right away. Everything’s changed.”

Although Mike initially visited Orthopedics & Sports Medicine for his joint concerns, the team’s attentiveness to his overall health led to a discovery that may have spared him a major health event.

Since then, Mike has come to understand just how seriously high blood pressure can affect his long-term health, including the risk of a heart attack or stroke. From that, he has gained a great appreciation for how early intervention and proactive care can help prevent significant, potentially life-altering health complications.

He also believes nurses deserve recognition for the important role they play in patient care and preventive efforts. “Pay attention to your nurses,” Mike said. “They’re the first ones who see you. They’re the first ones who take your vitals, and they’re the ones that look at you and go, ‘I have to tell the doctor.’”

With this new understanding, Mike decided to take charge of his health and began building habits that support a healthy lifestyle. He has adjusted his diet and added more movement into his daily routine. He also monitors his blood pressure regularly.

Mike has lost 40 pounds so far and remains committed to a lifestyle that supports his well-being, giving him a newfound outlook on life. “I feel that I have a better sense of my health and look forward to what the future brings,” Mike shared.

His story reinforces the importance of prioritizing health, staying current with regular checkups, building a partnership with your care team and knowing your numbers. Mike credits the Outer Banks Health Orthopedics & Sports Medicine team with helping him improve his quality of life and look toward healthier horizons.
