The center does not replace your primary care physician, in fact, we work closely with your doctor to help you achieve your goals.

Think of the Center for Healthy Living as your wellness specialist. If you need knee surgery, your primary care provider would send you to an orthopedic specialist. If you need help with a lifestyle change or support that will greatly improve your health or quality of life, your primary care provider may refer you to the Center for Healthy Living.

Tobacco Treatment Program

Our program is an evidenced-based approach designed to assist you in reducing or quitting your tobacco use. With behavioral interventions and nicotine replacement therapy, we will equip you with strategies to make the necessary changes in your life to help you achieve a tobacco-free lifestyle. We will be with you on the journey to provide the support and encouragement that you need to achieve your goals.

Gray-Area Drinking

Gray-area drinking encompasses individuals who may not display signs of alcohol use disorder (AUD) or meet the criteria for AUD. However, they may exhibit habits of excessive alcohol consumption in social settings or alone, which can lead to various health issues such as weight gain, sleep problems, hormonal imbalances, high blood pressure, anxiety, or depression. Gray-area drinkers may use alcohol as a means to manage anxiety, only to later regret the amount and frequency of their drinking. We offer assistance in modifying and reducing alcohol consumption, or quitting altogether.

Diabetes Education and Support

We offer individualized education and support sessions for patients with prediabetes, diabetes, or gestational diabetes. Spouse or caregivers are encouraged to attend. We will review selfcare behaviors: healthy eating, being active, monitoring, taking medications, solving problems, reducing risks, and healthy coping. We provide assistance with goal setting. Offered both in office or via telemedicine.

This program is free of charge. Duration: A patient-centered follow-up is determined at initial visit. We encourage review at diagnosis, annually, when complications influence self-management, and for transitions of care.

Secondary Stroke Prevention

A Stroke or Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA) diagnosis can leave patients feeling overwhelmed as they transition home from the hospital.  The Stroke Nurse Navigator will follow up with patients after discharge from the hospital to review your discharge plan, talk about personal risk factors for stroke, provide education, and assist in connecting you with resources in the OBH Center for Healthy Living to help reduce your risk of secondary stroke. Remember to “BEFAST” if you suspect you or someone else is having a stroke.  These symptoms include balance loss, vision changes, face drooping, arm or leg weakness, and speech difficulty.  Call 911 as soon as symptoms begin to decrease the chances of residual deficits.

Stroke Support Network

The Outer Banks Health Stroke Support Network is a support group for stroke survivors and caregivers.  The group meets the first Tuesday of each month from 11 a.m. – noon.  There is the option to join virtually via Zoom or in-person.

All requests for healthcare information or copies of healthcare records require a written authorization (Release Of Information Consent Form) completed by you or your legal agent/representative. Due to the confidential nature of personal health information, records cannot be faxed. Requested health information can be obtained through MyChart, emailed via a secure server, sent via the United States Postal Service to the address as indicated by you on your consent form or picked up at The Center for Healthy Living. When picking up records, a form of identification (photo ID preferred) must be presented before the records are released to ensure you (or your legal agent) is the only person(s) obtaining your records.
