Patient and Family Advisory Council

Outer Banks Health is developing a committee to champion the patient experience. The Patient and Family Advisory Council (PFAC) will bring together community members and leaders, Outer Banks Health team members, and physicians who are invested in highlighting the patient experience.

PFAC members will be tasked with providing the patient voice to Outer Banks Health initiatives and strategic planning as we continue to grow as an institution to meet the health needs of this incredible community.

Patient and Family Advisory Council Member Criteria and Application

Qualifications

  • Upholds our ICEAST values (Integrity, Compassion, Education, Accountability, Safety, Teamwork) to the highest degree.
  • Passionate about the patient’s experience in healthcare, willing to speak for the patient experience in a positive, professional, and collaborative way with OBH team members.
  • Willing to connect with patients and community members to gather their stories as well as drive efforts to improve the health of our community.
  • Live in a community served by Outer Banks Health.
  • Have experience as a patient, related to a patient, or a community member seeking wellness services.
  • A strong appreciation for diversity and inclusion.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and creative thinking skills.
  • Self-motivated to help drive efforts to improve the health of our community.

Responsibilities

  • Round throughout the hospital and practices to hear directly from patients about their experiences.
  • Collaborate with hospital leaders to review patient experience information, system data, patient education, and initiatives that serve to improve the quality of care.
  • Enhance population health by serving as a spokesperson, promoting education, participating in preventative health community events, and encouraging the community to take action regarding their health.

Commitment

PFAC members are asked to commit to a one-year term. Once established, The Council will meet quarterly to set group expectations, review agenda items, and explore opportunities to uplift the patient voice in shaping our system goals. Members may also be invited to participate in other ongoing Outer Banks Health subcommittees that focus on enhancing the patient experience. The average time commitment for a member is 4-10 hours per month.

Application Process

Applicants will be called in to complete a group or individual interview with OBH leaders and team members. Once selected, PFAC candidates will complete a one-day training with health system leaders to educate and support their success in this new role.
