The Outer Banks Hospital and Medical Group presented the inaugural Beacon of Health — 2019 Physician of the Year Award to radiation oncologist Charles “Trey” Shelton, M.D. The award was given at the Doctors’ Day Dinner held at Duck Woods Country Club on March 27. The Beacon of Health Award is presented to individuals who embrace the hospital and medical group’s mission through exemplary performance with a focus on experience, quality, leadership and community.
Nominations were received via the OBH website, www.theouterbankshospital.com, during the month of January. Team members, peers, colleagues, patients and the community at large were invited to nominate physicians who have privileges at TOBH or are contracted physicians with Vidant Health.
There were a total of 43 nominations received for 13 physicians. The selection committee narrowed the list down to three and the TOBH Board of Directors made the final choice.
“Physicians of our hospital and medical group have some of the highest patient experience scores in the state. They support quality initiatives and are members of community coalitions to support the health of our community. They definitely should be honored,” said Ronnie Sloan, president of TOBH.
In front of his peers, team members, TOBH Development Council representatives, and his wife and daughter, Shelton was announced as the recipient. Obviously surprised, Shelton struggled to contain his emotions.
“There are so many others more deserving of this award. I would not have gotten this award if it wasn’t for the amazing cancer services team at TOBH. They make me look better than I am. I’m truly honored to have received this,” said Shelton. “I am so proud of the work being done.”
Shelton works at the OBH Radiation Therapy Center and has been an integral part of the hospital’s accreditation by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer. Currently the chair of the OBH Cancer Committee, Shelton is also the medical director for the OBH Radiation Therapy Center, for radiation oncology at Community Cancer Care Centers and for Vidant Cancer Care. He is a member of the Vidant Cancer Care Executive Leadership Committee.
Apart from being a physician, Shelton spends his time volunteering for Relay for Life, Duck Methodist Church, Ruthie’s Kitchen, Room at the Inn, Beach Food Pantry and Caring Hands.
